Gabe Askew Gets Personal: “Goat & Aaron”
Hornet director Gabe Askew creates another singular world of careful textures and fresh perspectives for his newest animated short called “Goat & Aaron.”
Askew: “I was laying in bed one morning, looking at the dust twinkle in a shaft of light from the window. Almost like a sneeze, a series of images came to be. I rolled over grabbed a sketchbook and very roughly sketched out about ten images I wanted to create. The script tying them together came later.
“But I was really keen on getting away from the computer and approaching a project the way I approach illustration. This is why each shot is formatted differently. And each shot began as a painting which I took into 3D and projected onto geometry. I’m not sure this technique is right for other projects but it was a refreshing break from the normal process.”

Created by the same expert team that designs our promotional videos and develops our Toxic Type and Toxic Templates collections, the brand new Toxic Themes product line offers a themed twist on the customizable template genre. Each coordinated template set is unique in both style and flow, diverging from the more regulated single-dropzone-per-segment format of a ready2go template to provide a freeform framework of animated segments that can be mixed, matched, customized and extended to your heart’s content. Much like our ready2go templates, if you want the exact look of a Toxic Theme animation, you can just add your own videos, photos and text in the placeholder areas of the template. But, as with ready2go, these projects are also supremely customizable when you need them to be. Change colors and backgrounds, turn off layers, mix segments, extend timing, add your own new elements or change the font used on the animated type – all depending on how you need to alter the look to suit your particular project.

Allegorithmic Substance Designer
Hellard

Digital Tutors - Topology Tools in ZBrush
Intermediate | 1h 06m | Project Files 1.27 GB | Required Software: ZBrush 4R4
In this series of tutorials, we will discuss the various topology functions in ZBrush and how they can be used in your projects. The topology, or edge flow, of our polygon meshes is important as we create our projects in ZBrush. Good topology can mean fewer overall polygons are needed to reflect the detail we want. Good edge flow is also important when creating final meshes that require animation. ZBrush provides a number of great tools that allow artists to customize the topology of their meshes- tools like the Topology Brush and QRemesher. ZBrush’s topology tools can also be used to selective replace local areas with new topology and to create entirely new meshes for things like masks, hoods, capes, or other accessories. This course goes over the different Topology creation options in ZBrush and talks about some of the advantages and disadvantages of each. In the end you’ll be able to decide which methods you like the best when modifying the topology of your own ZBrush projects.

The Gnomon Workshop – Environment Production Workflow – Tips, Tricks and Concepts
Duration: 212 minutes
Software Used: Autodesk? 3ds Max?, Pixologic ZBrush4R4? ,Adobe? Photoshop? ,World Machine
3D Environment artists require an extensive set of tools and techniques in their arsenal in order to deal with the complexity of a full 3D environment. Environment artist David Lesperance will guide you through his process for developing 3D environments in Environment Production Workflow – Tips, Tricks and Concepts. Various topics are addressed in this lecture, starting with the composition and layout of the scene, lighting, materials, textures, and sculpting techniques. David begins his lecture on composition and layout, along with some of the techniques he uses to find the best composition for the environment he is designing. This includes finding the right mood and using some quick Adobe? Photoshop? tricks to enhance the lighting in the scene He then moves into Autodesk? 3ds Max? to go over his process for developing materials in V-Ray?, starting with glass and various metal materials, pointing out various options in the V-Ray? material to make it easier to troubleshoot issues when they arise. His lecture then moves into terrain modeling, discussing a series of techniques he uses to design convincing terrains. He first discusses a technique for blending surfaces, starting by sculpting some high resolution rock formations using ZBrush4R4? and combining them in 3ds Max? using some Boolean operations. He then demonstrates how blend materials across the surfaces using vertex paint to control a mask within a Blend Material. Next he moves on to terrain building using World Machine to generate fractal based terrain maps and exporting displacement maps to rapidly create terrain assets. David’s next series of lectures focus on the practical layout, composition, texturing, and lighting a digital environment. Here, he focuses on the build process, starting with rough layout, then adding various rubble assets before moving into lighting and texturing the environment. During the texture phase, he discusses texture scale issues and demonstrates how to keep texture scale consistent across multiple assets. His final set of lectures focus primarily on rapid modeling and sculpting techniques he employs in his workflow. Here, David discusses everything from high-resolution sub-D modeling in 3ds Max? to high resolution sculpting techniques in ZBrush?. His primary focus inside ZBrush? is the use of the new Insert Multi Mesh tool and the latest updates to Dynamesh in ZBrush4R4?.

Digital-Tutors – Utilizing State Sets in 3ds Max
Intermediate | 1h 13m | Project Files 3 MB | Required Software: 3ds Max 2013, After Effects CS5
In this series of 3ds Max 2013 tutorials, we’ll learn how to take advantage of the State Set tools found in 3ds Max. With the State Set tools, we have a very powerful system for creating and managing render layers in 3ds Max, as well as providing two-way transfer of data between 3ds Max and After Effects. We will begin our course by familiarizing ourselves with the basic functionality of the State Sets, and using them to create a number of highly customized render passes for our scene. We’ll learn how to use the Compositor view to preview the final assembled result of our passes, and we’ll learn how to send all of our passes and 3D data from 3ds Max directly to After Effects using the Media Sync toolset. Finally, we’ll explore the process of utilizing 3ds Max data and 3D layers directly inside of After Effects as part of our compositing pipeline.
