CGSociety :: Software Focus
11 December 2012

The Hive was originally a 2D image by famous concept artist Sang Han. It was one of the most widely acclaimed concept art piece to come out of the Dominance Wars IV contest. Recently, 3D master Jarred Everson was planning on giving it a 3D life using, among other tools, Substance Designer, I thought it would be a great opportunity to watch the development of ‘The Hive from 2D to 3D.

"SUBSTANCE HAS OPENED THE DOORS TO NEAR INFINITE POSSIBILITIES" - Jarred Everson

Jarred Everson has worked in Broadcast, Film, and the Game industry for over a decade now. He's shipped four titles, currently working on his fifth at a rather large southern California game developer.

Everson works from home, knowing that he would be doing 3D all day long at an office. "I work from home because I can create whatever I want, it's the more artistic side to what I do, I love my job, and the work I do, but at home I get to do everything the way I want to," he says. "I get to conceptualize, model, texture, light, paint, characters, and environments using tools that work best for me, there are no deadlines at home, so I have time to play with different tools."

Digital Tutors - ZBrush and Mudbox Integration

วิดีโอสอนการทำงานร่วมกันของโปรแกรม Sculpting ระหว่าง ZBrush and Mudbox

Digital-Tutors – ZBrush and Mudbox Integration

Intermediate | 0h 47m | Required Software: ZBrush 4R3, Mudbox 2013, Maya 2012

In this course, we will discuss methods for transferring ZBrush projects to Mudbox and Mudbox projects to ZBrush. ZBrush and Mudbox are both powerful sculpting and painting applications that can be found in pipelines across the industry. They each offer unique tools and workflows for creating very detailed models and textures. Depending on your application of choice, there may come a time when you need to transfer a project in progress to the other program. Perhaps a model is being passed on by a colleague who’s been working in ZBrush or Mudbox and you’d like to continue working on it in the other application. Or there may be tools or particular workflows you’d like to take advantage of by transferring your projects. This course goes over the process for rebuilding projects, complete with subdivision levels and textures, in ZBrush and Mudbox. We’ll talk about different ways of transferring geometry and sculpted detail. We’ll go over methods for transferring textures back and forth and discuss the recreation of layers in both applications. Whether you need to take a project from ZBrush to Mudbox, or from Mudbox to ZBrush, you’ll have a much better idea of some of the issues involved and how you can make that transfer as smooth as possible.

In this tutorial we will cover the creation of a dragon using reason and common sense. Through these lessons we will endeavor to create a dragon using the same kind of thinking and logic that I apply to my prehistoric creature modeling. We will use a variety of methods to achieve this along with a number of new features in the latest release of ZBrush 4 R 4. We will cover Qremesher as well as retopology and the new mesh insert brush feature.

Digital Tutors - Topology Tools in ZBrush

วิดีโอสอน Topology Tools ในโปรแกรม ZBrush

Intermediate | 1h 06m | Project Files 1.27 GB | Required Software: ZBrush 4R4

In this series of tutorials, we will discuss the various topology functions in ZBrush and how they can be used in your projects. The topology, or edge flow, of our polygon meshes is important as we create our projects in ZBrush. Good topology can mean fewer overall polygons are needed to reflect the detail we want. Good edge flow is also important when creating final meshes that require animation. ZBrush provides a number of great tools that allow artists to customize the topology of their meshes- tools like the Topology Brush and QRemesher. ZBrush’s topology tools can also be used to selective replace local areas with new topology and to create entirely new meshes for things like masks, hoods, capes, or other accessories. This course goes over the different Topology creation options in ZBrush and talks about some of the advantages and disadvantages of each. In the end you’ll be able to decide which methods you like the best when modifying the topology of your own ZBrush projects.
